The Ninth Oar has been in the making since long before the papers we’re filed for Non-profit status. The founders were then active oarsmen on the Sonoma State University Crew and thought of an organization similar to others across the nation where alumni, and current oarsmen, and supporters could find common cause in ensuring the continued success of the then fledgling team.

Years later while in their final year at the university, Khoua Moua, Mike Villeggiante, and Dan Kelly came to live together where Moua brought the idea for what would become the Ninth Oar forward once again. The Ninth Oar was incorporated in early 2009 after months of filing work and the three founders became the first board of directors. Moua had led the three thus far in their efforts and became President while Villeggiante became Secretary for his leadership experience and Kelly was named Treasurer owing to his experience in accounting.

Today, the Ninth Oar uses the Sonoma State University Rowing Alumni database and community outreach to attract a support base to help advance the team and the corporation toward continued success and the goals outlined by the founders. Members are invited to attend all corporation-sponsored events and assist wherever possible. Donations and membership dues are used primarily in pursuit of various financial instruments including endowment, team travel, and equipment purchasing funds, and in the hopes of fulfilling the team’s dream of a new boathouse on the Petaluma River.
